Photography in uni? WHAT!

Photography in uni? WHAT!
Hey Readers,

So I wanted to talk about something else before carrying on with my Hong Kong/Beijing journey photos.

I think you can tell a lot about somebody's level of intelligence by sitting down with them and having a five minute conversation than looking at all their grades on a piece of paper. It really troubles me when people use academic achievement as a means of measuring intelligence. Before I started studying photography, I would constantly be asked what are you studying or what are you going to major? My answer very proudly would be 'Photography,' and their facial expressions and voice tone would be as if I am not suppose to study photography, because it is not seen as an academic subject.

I remember having a phone call from abroad and I was talking to all my relatives, and one asked ''What are you going to study? Law? Business? Accounting? Doctor? Engineering?'' I was like '' ummm photography.' An awkward silence filled the conversation well lack of it at that time. Of course these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life but art, images, beauty, design, these are what we stay alive for, well I do.

I was always told to follow my dreams and do anything I want  as long as I do it with the best of my ability, so yes I decided photography and then I am faced with all these why's, why study it? Why do photography it's so easy? Why learn how to take pictures when you can already? Why not do something more studious? And then the dream crushing what ifs? What if you fail, what if you don't get into the industry, what if you don't make money, what if you regret it?

Firstly I want to make it clear that studying photography isn't an easy option,it isn't an option where we just take photos and just talk about cameras. It is much more than that. There are 3 parts to the course, Practical, critical and contextual, a lot of analysing, a lot of reading, a lot of essays and a lot of work!

People look at me as if I am less intelligent because I have chosen to do a subject that I love, a creative subject. People look at most people who do a creative subject as if they are less intelligent and it troubles me. It does get to me sometimes and I am thinker so I just think endless hours about the what ifs but its too late now, I have made my decision and going to pursuit what I have a passion for. Just because I am doing a subject that is creative doesn't mean I cannot understand business, law or politics or any less intelligent than one who studies those subjects.

Sometimes I do honestly think of just giving up but then I will just regret for the rest of my life thinking why did I never at least try to achieve something, and something I love doing too! It is all well achieving something but it is a far more greater feeling when you love it as well.

In conclusion to this all, don't let anyone try bring you down if you want to achieve something! There are too many people scared to take a chance so they try to ruin other peoples chances too! When people are too scared to dream, they find pleasure in crushing other peoples dreams. Do what makes you happy and don't let anyone tell you different.

I shall be starting this Monday. I actually want to do another course on the side but hopefully in January since I want to start with one course first. I am sorry for writing so much as usual, once I start writing I cannot stop!

See you soon my lovely readers, good bye summer and welcome back to reality everyone!

Day 2 in HK continued...Food glorious food!

Day 2 in HK continued...Food glorious food!
Hello everyone, this is the continuation of Hong Kong Day 2.

Later on we made our way back to the ladies market and roamed around the area just looking at random things being sold and the people walking by, occasionally someone would just stop and look at us, wave or smile and carry on doing what they were doing.  The ladies market sold everything from fruit to shoes to watches at ridiculously cheap prices. I am not too sure why they called the market 'ladies market' but it was great.

We also walked around the city streets where the high end shops were, were everyone dressed up as the lights gleamed across their faces. Food being sold on the street corners and the different aromas would pass by my nostrils each time I walked past the food stalls. I have really no idea what ingredients they used or what some of the food was, nor did I try any( I stuck to fast food restaurants) but there seemed to be a long queue at these restaurants so it must have tasted delicious. I still didn't see any scorpions on sticks or insects being fried but maybe that was a good thing.
These kittens up above were at the front window for anyone to choose and they would be cooked in the kitchen in the back and served either rare, medium-rare or well-done. I would watch the little kids pointing to the one they wanted and the chef would pick it up by its neck and take it into the back. I know sad... very sad that you even believed what I was saying.

See you soon readers for another Day 2 in HK at Sky 100. A building that is 100 floors high and you can see all of the city lit up at night. A 360 degree view.

Hong Kong Day 1 continued...

Hong Kong Day 1 continued...

Hey everyone,

So... we hopped into a taxi and then walked through the busy, humid, light filled streets. The bus tour was great, going through all the streets and seeing Hong Kong at night. We did have to queue for about 15minutes because the bus tour was really popular. They gave us free earphones to put in while someone( a robot) spoke in English thankfully with some kind of German accent too. I raced to the top of the bus and to the front, however every time I stood up to take a shot, I would forget the earphones were still attached to my ears and would occasional be knocked off balance.

Hope you enjoy the pictures!
The weirdest thing ever! A dog in a pram and a dog which is pink and purple!
I arrived at the hotel at around 12:00am with feet aching, back pain and no sense of direction or time, only for a 7:00am wake up call to go down for breakfast….Day 2 continued next time!

See you soon readers!

Hong Kong Day 1.

Day 1 in Hong Kong.

Hey readers, I am alive barely without proper internet connection. I am currently writing from an ipad which is very annoying. (That was 2 weeks ago). Now I can finally actually click 'publish'.

I arrived in Hong Kong after a long day consisting of sitting on a plane, transferring and waiting around for 15hours. It was 7am as we collected our bags and then gave them to the hotel staff  to take to our hotel because our journey was just beginning despite the lack of sleep and the time difference.
We wanted to make the most of the time in Hong Kong so instead of going back to the hotel and relaxing doing nothing, we decided to go eat breakfast and watch the world go by as little children ran through the water fountain in the middle of the square. The temperature was very warm but we definitely felt the humidity, it reminded me of Qatar. After all that, we headed to the cable car. We were going to take the original cabin but decided to take the crystal cabin which had a glass floor so it was pretty cool. The journey was around 40minutes up to the mountain. The sights from the cable car were breathtaking and in the end we forgot we were even standing on glass!
From there we wondered around looking into the temples decorated with flowers, fruit and amazing art work on the ceilings. On the top of the mountain was a gigantic Buddha but to be honest with you the stairs looked too steep and I felt dizzy to even think about going up them, so I watched from the bottom as people panted and sweated on their way down.  A few people had these incense sticks and they would do some kind of prayer with them and then put them into a cauldron, I wasn't too sure what they were doing but it seemed so peaceful, the smell was lovely throughout the area. At this time I was wearing my loafers which were giving me serious blisters so I couldn't wait to change into some sandals.
By the time we left it was evening so we went to the hotel for a few hours because we had a night bus tour to catch. I changed into some sandals and had a short walk around the neighbor hood only for my sandals to cut in-between my toes so operation emergency to the nearest shop that sold plasters and find some other shoes quickly before heading out to the night life in Hong Kong.
First McDonald's meal in Hong kong and many more too!
Looking down was awesome.
I really don't know how any one would want to walk up the hill and it was up hill stairs all the way too!
Day 1 in Hong Kong continued will be posted soon!
I would have posted more often but now I am in china and they block everything, twitter, kik, youtube, bbc news, and yes of course blogspot! I am trying my best with VPN to get on to blogspot but it just keeps disconnecting.  I don’t know how anyone can live in china without tearing their hair out with all these blocked websites.
